Here’s a bit of trivia: what do television dinners, “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” and the Detroit Lions have in common? Thanksgiving.
Okay, so now we have some explaining to do, right? Well, here goes…
In 1953, long before the advent of broadband internet and streaming video, people actually watched their favorite shows on television. Incredible, right? What’s even more incredible is that prior to 1953, TV dinners didn’t exist. Like many great inventions, it all started off as a solution to a problem, which in this case, was 260 pounds of surplus frozen turkey at Swanson’s facilities. The man with the answer to this problem: salesman Gerry Thomas, who ordered 5,000 aluminum trays and hired a group of women to fill these trays with turkey, corn-bread dressing, peas, and sweet potatoes.
Notice something else these factoids have in common? They all came from Time Magazine, and rather than rehash the writing of their hardworking authors, you can read about even more Thanksgiving facts here: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1862503_1862505,00.html
